Football: Laval lands AGN (Arnaud Gascon-Nadon)

Arnaud Gascon-Nadon is headed down the river -- the standout defensive end has decided to ply his craft with Laval next season, note our friends at Allez Les Bleus.

Gascon-Nadon, as previously noted (July 13), is a huge get for Laval. The Montrealer had a stellar freshman season in 2008 with the Rice Owls in Conference USA, but reportedly said life in Houston, Texas was not for him. You might say he had good timing for leaving: Rice is 1-9 this season after going a school-best 10-3 in '08.

Montréal has D-linemen Mathieu Brossard and Martin Gagné moving on, so this hurts.

  1. Rice has a tremendous academic reputation so the transfer to Laval, a school that isn't on anyones top five when it comes to academia, hints at the turmoil that Canadian university sport is about to face. Gascon-Nadon's choice to attend Laval, although not a sign that the apocalypse is upon us, is a clear indicator that the OUA and other academically challenging institutions are at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to recruiting. Personally, I hate the idea of schools like Queens, U of T, Western, and Waterloo having to compromise academic integrity to allow themselves to appear attractive to then next hot next-level recruit. Then again, I'm not on the playing fields and I’m not responsible for energizing alumni donations.
