Basketball: Wulff and Roc done at Windsor?

Hey, remember the Windsor Lancers' women's basketball team? 21-1 season, second in RPI, fourth place at nationals, recruiting players from France's national junior team?

Well, it looks like running the table in the OUA this year will be...more difficult.

Alisa Wulff and Dranadia Roc, two of the Lancers' big three from last year (they were 1st and 8th Ontario-wide in player efficiency rating; Iva Peklova was 4th; all were top 20 in Canada), are no longer listed on the roster. Now, not everyone expected to be a Lancer this fall is on there; notably, the two recruits announced nearly two months ago are absent, but this confirms what one source has been hearing, and what has been the scuttlebutt around the province for a while.

This would be a huge loss for the Lancers: Wulff and Roc represent 28% of minutes played in 2008-09, 36% of points scored, and about half of their three-balls. Not to mention that it's somewhat unexpected, because neither player was in her fifth year. (In fact, none of last year's Lancers were, another reason so much was expected in '09-'10.)

Last year, it was McMaster who discovered what happens to 21-1 records when you lose a star player for the season. What will happen to Windsor if they lose two?

  1. They'll be fine....the bigs are better...and Laura Mullins should be back. Recall that they played without Mullins during the playoffs. Mullins was the elading scorer prior to injury. Windsor will still lead the OUA West pack. I say 17-5.

  2. Yeah, they should win the OUA again no problem but that's not the point.
Looking at the bigger picture, does this hurt their chances at winning nationals?
Last year was their first time there, and they were a given a good chance of advancing farther this year...that is, until now.
Now, there are a lot of question marks.

  3. Nationals might be a stretch...I think they'll be there again..but won't be capable of winning...yet. They are actually a very young team now...best days are still ahead.

  4. you don't lose players of that quality and not feel the impact. Windsor will come right back to the pack and have to fight UWO and McMaster for top spot. BTW, Mac hosts CIS finals this year.

  5. Western??? I think you just blew your credibility there. They've lost a lot more than Windsor.

McMaster should be solid. I see Mac & Laurier as Windsor's main competition.

  6. UWO did lose some good talent, but will still be solid. Coach Barrie is an excellent coach and they have an NCAA transfer ready to play in January. I still see OUA West as a womens league with lots of parity.

  7. Windsor will be a different team this year...they will pound the ball inside with Peklova & Prince...and wear you down.
