Basketball: Lady Vees great Carolyn Sturgess, 39, loses fight with breast cancer

Condolences are extended to the people close to Carolyn Sturgess (née Swords), the former Laurentian basketball star who died following a battle with breast cancer.
"Sturgess lost a long and courageous battle to breast cancer; she was 39-years old. As recent as August, she participated in Edmonton's Weekend to End Breast Cancer, which included a 60-kilometer walk. Sturgess, along with her team of 13 completed the walk and raised $32,000."

Sturgess, the sister of Laurentian men's coach Shawn Swords, was integral when the Lady Vees won the Bronze Baby back-to-back in 1990 and 1991 and added bronze medals in '92-93. She was a five-time academic all-Canadian while studying engineering. Speaking as someone whose sister who has broken into that once male-dominated field, there's a common thread.

Sturgess is survived by her spouse, Kelly, and two sons, Mason and Matthew. They live in Viking, Alta.
