Hockey: Dinos make triumphant return

The Calgary Dinos women's hockey team got off to a great start in their return to CIS play, beating the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 in Vancouver Friday night in their regular-season opener.

It was the renewal of a rivalry that had been dormant since 2002, the last year Calgary played in CIS before moving to the Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference (ACAC). For Calgary, it was a terrific way to return to CIS competition, especially on the road against a rival. They were outshot 19-15, though, and needed a great effort in goal from Jessica Ross to take home the win; Ross stopped 18 of 19 shots and held the Dinos in the game in the third period, where they only mustered three shots of their own.

Tanya Morgan
scored first for Calgary and Elana Lovell added a second marker. UBC put on great pressure late, and Serina Swanson scored their only goal of the night, but it wasn't enough: Rebecca Niehaus clinched the game late with a empty-netter. The Thunderbirds will have a chance for revenge against their old rivals tonight, though, as the teams will face off again at 10:30 Eastern/7:30 Pacific. The game can be heard live on UBC's student radio station, CiTR. Thanks to Wilson Wong for passing along the information on the broadcast!
