Basketball: Rana to lead Rams —

Roy Rana's big summer, which has already involved guiding Canada's cadet basketball team to a berth in next year's under-17 men's world championship, just got bigger. He's to be named the new coach of the Ryerson Rams, who were fourth in the OUA East last season, reports Mark Wacyk.
"Rana's signing shows the commitment Ryerson University has made to athletics and the basketball program. Plans apparently are in the making for a modern, new gymnasium with seating of 2,000+ for basketball situated near the Rye campus in downtown Toronto and Rana's signing is the first of many planned milestones for a program now brimming with optimism." —
Rana has been director of development for Basketball Ontario, which is doing not half-bad these days. Both the boys and girls teams won gold at the under-15 nationals, which is the first step toward guiding players toward international play.

Ryerson's coaching search was a hot topic a couple weeks ago. Rana's track record speaks for itself and, hey, it wouldn't hurt if a downtown Toronto school whose alumni include many movers and shakers in the Canadian sports media had a more prominent basketball team.

  1. There is a guy over at who claims that Dave DeAveiro was offered the Ryerson job on Aug 4, thought about it a couple of days and turned it down. Is it true? Did Ottawa counter Ryerson's offer with a better one?

  2. Well, I'm not inside enough to know that answer.

    It is understandable why there would be such speculation — initially word was they would hire a coach Aug. 4, now it's getting settled Aug. 14. It's only human nature to wonder.

  3. You can bet Ottawa is relieved this is over.
    Had Ottawa U lost him to Ryerson, it would have taken years to wipe the egg off their face.
