Can West Notebook - Weekend Preview

1) End of an era:  This is the last regular season weekend for two of the Can West's legendary coaches.  Don Horwood is in his 26th and last season as head coach of the U of A Golden Bears.   The Golden Bears plays host to the top team in the Central division the University of Calgary.  Horwood is one of the winningest coaches in CIS history with 312 victories.   His Golden Bears will host a playoff game next weekend against Saskatchewan.  In Winnipeg, University of Manitoba head coach Rick Suffield is winding down his 23rd season as head coach.  If his Bisons do not beat both Trinity Western and Simon Fraser this weekend and Winnipeg does not lose to both those teams, than his career as head coach is over.

2) The Great Plains Division:  Things still very unsettled on the Prairies for Men's basketball.  Brandon and Regina play twice this weekend with first place on the line.  Regina trails Brandon by only one game in the division.  Winnipeg and Manitoba are way back, but one of the two teams will make it.  Neither team looks like a playoff team the Wesman have just 5 wins and the Bisons have 4.

3) Dancing at 9-7:  Home court advantage is one the line in men's volleyball action this weekend.  UBC brings their number 10 ranking in the country to Brandon against the fifth ranked Bobcats.  If one team wins both games this weekend they will host a playoff game next weekend.  Brandon won both games last year.

4) Same game, different gender:  The T-Birds and Bobcat ladies are also battling for homecourt this weekend.  UBC comes into the weekend at 13-5 in women's action.  Brandon is 12-6.  The Thunberbirds won both regular season contests last year and also swept the playoff series.  A Brandon sweep gets them a first round bye.

We will update what goes on and preview playoff action on Sunday.
