Hockey: University Cup - The Awards Banquet

I'm a bit late getting this posted as I had a few "pops" with friends after the awards banquet last night. Who knew the LCBO gives out air miles with purchases?

First, let's copy and paste all of the award winners, and therefore not bury the lede.

Everyone I talked to last night thought it was a much better banquet and awards presentation than last year. Food was the standard, but delicious, safe banquet fare of soup-salad-chicken-vegetables, although the emcee tried twice to joke that Alberta would have preferred beef. The evening's proceedings were snappier than last year with lots of loud music and graphics, although the local emcee didn't get off one joke that worked.

It was nice to see the deserved award winners have the opportunity to give their thank yous this year - though most stuck with the "thanks to my teammates, coach and congrats to the other nominees" script. Dr. Randy Gregg award winner Tyler Metcalfe of Alberta did make the point to his peers that any contribution that a hockey player can make to his community, so matter how small, is valuable and coach of the year Gardiner MacDougall joked that the award is obviously a regular season award and pointed out to fellow nominee Mike Sirant of Manitoba that he saved him the fate of recent coaching award winners -- dropping their first game at the University Cup.

More to follow later ...
