Hockey: Laurier passes torch, picks up bronze medal

It's apropos Laurier got five goals from rookie forward Devon Skeats en route to the bronze medal at the women's hockey nationals, since the OUA powerhouse figures to be a bit younger team.

The Golden Hawks beat Saint Mary's 4-0 in the bronze-medal game with Skeats scoring twice and OUA rookie of the year Candice Styles also scoring. The other Hawks goal came from second-year forward Caitlyn Muirhead.

Skeats' five goals topped her regular-season total.

Consider the torch passed for a team which loses six seniors who were semi-household names among CIS diehards — CIS player of the year Liz Knox in goal plus Vanessa Bennett, Andrea Ironside, Kate Psota and assistant captains Laura Bartolini and Stephanie Crarey. They'll look a little different next season when they host the nationals in Waterloo — meaning, yes, the OUA can finally get a second representative — but coach Rick Osborne should have his pick of players from southern Ontario on account of the Golden Hawks' seven-year monopoly on the OUA banner.
