Hockey: AUS Award Winners Announced

The AUS has released the major award winners and all-star teams for men's hockey.

No big surprises with UNB's Hunter Tremblay as MVP and Gardiner MacDougall as coach of the year. There were a lot of great rookies this season, but UPEI's Jared Gomes got the nod. SMU's Cam Fergus is the most sportsmanlike player for the second year in a row (isn't this the award hockey players really don't want ...) and UNB captain Kyle Bailey wins the Godfrey Award, making him the AUS candidate for the Dr. Randy Gregg award.

First team all-stars:
G – Kristofer Westblom, Acadia (2nd year – Meadow Lake, SK)
D – Luke Gallant, UNB (3rd year – Bedford, NS)
D – Andrew Hotham, Saint Mary's (3rd year - Barrie, ON)
F – Hunter Tremblay, UNB (3rd year - Timmins, ON)
F – Marc Rancourt, Saint Mary's (5th year - Gloucester, ON)
F – John Scott Dickson, UNB (5th year - Barrie, ON)

Second team all-stars:
G – Travis Fullerton, UNB (2nd year – Riverview, NB)
D – David MacDonald, Saint Mary’s (3rd year – Baddeck, NS)
D – Bretton Stamler, UNB (2nd year – Edmonton, AB)
F – Bryce Swan, StFX (2nd year – Alder Point, NS)
F – Jonathan Laberge, Acadia (2nd year – Ste-foy, QC)
F – Cody Thornton, Saint Mary’s (3rd year - Woodstock, ON)

All-rookie team:
G – Neil Conway, Saint Mary’s (Concord, OH)
D – Ben Shutron, UNB (Orleans, ON)
D – Nick Pageau, StFX (Stoney Creek, ON)
F – Jared Gomes, UPEI (Brampton, ON)
F – Spencer Jezegou, Acadia (Oshawa, ON)
F – Chris Culligan, UNB (Howie Center, NS)

Back on February 15 I made my picks. How'd I do? 2-for-4 on the major awards, 5-for-6 on the first team, 1-for-6 on the second team; 4-for-6 on the rookie team, and I didn't have Gomes (although I waffled on it at the time ...)

  1. Gomes was really quite a surprise choice as AUS Rookie of the Year. Gomes had 33 points including an empty net goal and was a +1.

The fact that UNB had 2 quality candidates may have hurt both of them. Ben Shutron had 27 points and was a (league best?) +27. Culligan helped Tremblay and Dickson achieve 1st All Star status with 32 points as well as playing a key role on both UNB's #1 ranked power play and #1 penalty kill while being a +14. His play was strong enough to earn top 4 forward ice time on the #1 ranked team all year.

  3. shutron's stats are inflated from being a good player make it a good team . Top's in the league and his team as a rookie . If only they had used him on the first power play in the play-offs .
