Women's hockey: Martlets duo, Hawks goalie earn silver

A tip of the cap goes out to McGill's Anne-Sophie Bettez and Catherine Ward, as well as Laurier goalie Liz Knox, for representing this country at the MPL Nations Cup women's under-22 championshipin Ravensburg, Germany.

Now for the buried lede: For the first time, Canada took home silver from the tournament, losing 2-1 to Sweden in the gold medal game. Sara Grahn, who was in goal when Sweden's senior national team beat Canada for the first time ever at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid, N.Y., two months ago, stopped 34-of-35 shots. Erica Udén-Johansson factored in both goals for the Tre Kroner.

Knox made 22 saves for Canada. The CIS trio, along with coach Sarah Howald from the U of Regina, deserve some attention for representing Canada.

Ryerson coach Stephanie White is guiding the U18 team at their world tournament in Fussen, Germany. Calgary's Danielle Goyette and York's Dave Vanslack are also on the coaching staff. Canada has won its first two games by a combined 22-1 margin, with Jamie Lee Rattray of Kanata scoring four goals. The medal round starts Friday.
