  1. Interesting stuff, Rob. From the margins, it certainly looks like Canada West is the toughest conference (either that or the rest of their teams are closer to the top ones). Out of curiosity, did you crunch these numbers yourself, or is there a stats site you got them from? The OUA stats site seems to have some different results, particularly in the points against: they have Lakehead first with 48.6 points against per game (which is clearly wrong if you compare it to their scores and results, as they never held anyone below 50 points and frequently got torched for 80 or more), Carleton second with 57.5, Ottawa third with 63.14 and Queen's fourth with 65.41. Are you including out-of conference games? If so, that probably explains the discrepancy.

  2. This was a simple copy-and-paste from the CIS standings (available here) which I believe includes only conference games. For what it's worth, the OUA standings agree with the Ontario results on that CIS site (which isn't surprising, given that they're probably from the same source).

This page, under the basketball team stats on the OUA site, is the one I think you may be referencing. I'm assuming it's wrong, based on the Lakehead impossibility you pointed out, and also because of the next paragraph I'm about to write.

The 57.5 figure on the OUA team stats site for Carleton is based on 1266 points against in 22 games; from the CIS site (or the OUA standings), we get 1318 points against in 22 games. If we actually go to the Ravens' site and add up their points against from the regular-season schedule, we get 1318. So I'm sticking with 59.9 per game rather than 57.5

Personally, I think it's amazing that the OUA can't keep track of two numbers per game, even when those numbers are displayed in giant red letters during the game.

  3. Canada West is the highest-scoring conference:

Average number of points per game
    West, 78.6
    Atlantic, 76.6
    Quebec, 75.7
    Ontario, 74.0

There are three teams who scored more than 10% higher than the league average: Carleton, Calgary, and Acadia. Windsor and St. Mary's are both between 9% and 10%.

In terms of points against per game, there are six teams beating the conference by 10% or more: Carleton, Acadia, Victoria, Cape Breton, Queen's, and Ottawa.

You'll notice only two teams are on both lists. So Acadia certainly deserves that #4 ranking nation-wide, and maybe even a 2 or 3.

  4. Haha, that's amazing... chalk up another statistical mistake for the OUA. Thanks for the explanation: CIS standings certainly sound more reliable. It's remarkable that the OUA can't even add up their own numbers though. I think your last post helps reinforce the case for Canada West being the most even conference.

...if you ignore Mark Cheers' RPI, of course.
