Hockey: Nearing the end of the OUA season

According to the hopefully-accurate OUA standings, we have the following teams in OUA playoff contention (points, games remaining):

WEST
1. Lakehead (43, 3)
2. Brock (37, 1)

3. Western (38, 3)
4. Laurier (32, 2)
5. Waterloo (32, 3)
6. York (29, 2)

Eliminated:
7. Guelph (25, 1)
8. UOIT (13, 2)
9. Windsor (11, 2)

All six teams have been decided, but the seedings are yet to be determined. Brock has already clinched a first-round bye with their 8-point Mid West lead over the second-place Lions. These two teams play each other on Thursday; York's last game is Friday night at UOIT.

In the Far West division, Waterloo plays Western tonight and Laurier Thursday. As explained in UWO's The Gazette, a Warriors win tonight means Lakehead also clinches a bye and home ice throughout the West playoffs. The most likely 4 vs. 5 matchup at this point is Waterloo vs. Laurier; their respective performance in the next four days will decide who gets to host Game 3 (if needed).

EAST
1. UQTR (39, 3)
2. Toronto (27, 2)

3. McGill (35, 2)
4. Ottawa (28, 2)
5. Queen's (27, 1)
6. Carleton (25, 2)
7. Concordia (23, 3)

Eliminated:
8. RMC (22, 1)
9. Ryerson (19, 1)

Both Toronto and Queen's have 27 points, but the Blues have a game in hand as well as one more win. I believe a loss by the Gaels gives Toronto a bye. Queen's plays their last game tomorrow at RMC; Toronto hosts Lakehead on Thursday in a game that may have no effect on the playoff seedings, then they welcome the last-place Rams on Friday night.

UQTR has probably clinched first place: McGill would need to win both games, and the Patriotes would have to lose all three, to give the teams identical 19-8-1 records. Concordia's in tough after two losses last week. They have two games left against the Patriotes and one against Ottawa.

The Gee Gees are in good shape, with two games left to pick up a point or two and grab that 4th spot. Both games will be on the road, however, as they travel to Carleton and Concordia.

Upcoming "Important" Games

The season ends on Sunday; the games between now and Friday that can affect the seedings are listed below:

Tue Feb 5 (tonight):
Western @ Waterloo (I cannot attend, unfortunately)

Wed Feb 6:
Queen's @ RMC, though it appears Queen's is the "home" team
Concordia @ UQTR

Thu Feb 7:
Laurier @ Waterloo

There are five games scheduled for Friday, five for Saturday, and three for Sunday. We'll have a clearer picture of the possible playoff matchups come Friday afternoon.
