Football: Inside the Q's Opening Week

Recapping the first week of the QUFL is never an easy task, as you’re not sure if certain things are a sign of things to come or if they were a one game aberration.

Despite that, there were a lot of interesting matchups in week one.

Sherbrooke (0-0) @ No. 7 Montreal (0-0) :: 33-27 Montreal

In the QUFL opener, No. 7 Montreal took on Sherbrooke in what was a tale of two halves. Montreal took a 21-3 lead, then saw the Vert et Or come back to make the score 27-24 after a William Dion field goal.

With just over two minutes remaining, the Carabins stormed back on their own with a short touchdown run by Vincent Pelletier-Bouchard to take the lead back for good. They added a safety to take the game by the 33-27 final.

Key Stats:
Montreal: 232 penalty yards on 27 penalties
Alex Poirier (SHE): 11 catches, 153 yards, TD
Rotrand Sene (MON): 20 carries, 109 yards

Concordia (0-0) @ Bishop’s (0-0) :: 17-14 Concordia

Both offences were slow to arrive in the first ever night game at Bishop’s Coulter Field. The score was 7-3 (on two field goals and a single) until Liam Mahoney caught a Rob Mackay pass with 58 seconds left in the first half. Concordia went up 17-7 when first-year linebacker Max Caron batted a Jesse Andrews pass up in the air before catching it in the end zone.

Bishop’s cut the lead to three on the last play of the third quarter and missed a 46 yard field goal for the tie in the game’s final minutes.

Key Stats:
Bishop’s: 153 penalty yards on 19 penalties
Jesse Andrews (UB): 21-35, 263yds, 1 TD, 2 INT
Max Caron (CON): 3.5 tackles, INT, TD

McGill (0-0) @ No. 2 Laval (0-0) :: 50-9 Laval

Laval took a while to get going, but once they did, they were too much for the Redmen. The Rouge et Or took a 10-2 halftime lead and ran with it, scoring 40 points in the second half.

For the Redmen, a lot of concern went to quarterback Jonathan Collin who suffered a “fairly significant” injury in the words of head coach Sonny Wolfe to his left knee. Receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte became the first CIS player to have 200 career catches.

Key Stats:
Sebastien Levesque (LAV): 20 carries, 143 yards, 2 TD
Jeff Thompson (MCG): 5 kick returns, 144 yds, 5 punt returns, 37 yards
Arnaud Gascon-Nadon (LAV): 4.5 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 sack

Standings:
1. LAVAL 1-0
2. MONTREAL 1-0
3. CONCORDIA 1-0
4. SHERBROOKE 0-1
5. BISHOP’S 0-1
6. McGILL 0-1
