Soccer: Laurier Coach leading Chunky MVC

Laurier men's soccer coach Mario Halapir is currently the leading vote-getter in the Campell's Chunky Most Valuable Coach contest.

Halapir, who coached the men's team to an improbable OUA Championship in 2008-09 and was an assistant to Barry Maclean's back-to-back National Championship squads in 2000 and 2001, has distinguished himself both at Laurier and in the K-W soccer community by running a popular soccer shop in downtown as well as coaching the Kitchener U12 squad.

Halapir regularly helps organize and sponsor community soccer initiatives such as charity tourney's for breast cancer research and he always promotes his philosophy that as long as you have a spot in your heart for the love of the game, anyone can play it -- no matter the obstacles in your way.

If not for a nagging lower body injury in his youth, Halapir may have risen to become one of the finest soccer players Canada has produced, and it is a testament to his character that such an injury did not derail him from following the path of his true passion.
