Hockey: CIS top 10 - Top two teams suffer setbacks, stay put

Saturday night proved to be a tough one for last week's top three teams, with the trio all suffering losses. UNB, and McGill coming out on the wrong end of the scoreboard this past weekend didn't affect their standing inside the CIS top 10, while former number-three Western did, falling to number four in the poll.

1. UNB (20-5-0) / 179 pts (17) / (1)
2. McGill (22-2-2) / 142 (1) / (2)
3. Alberta (15-5-2) / 130 / (4)
4. Western Ontario (20-2-4) / 117 / (3)
5. Saint Mary's (16-9-1) / 111 / (6)
6. Saskatchewan (15-7-0) / 107 / (5)
7. St. Francis Xavier (15-10-1) / 74 / (7)
8. Carleton (17-7-2) / 45 / (NR)
9. Calgary (13-8-2) / 30 / (NR)
10. Acadia (14-8-3) / 21 / (NR)

Other teams receiving votes: UPEI (10), Manitoba (10), Guelph (6), Nipissing (5), Wilfrid Laurier (3)
Dropped from the top 10: UPEI (#8 last week), Manitoba (#9), Nipissing (#10)

Top three tales: As mentioned above, UNB and McGill both lost this past weekend, but that didn't change the rankings for the top two teams in the nation. The Varsity Reds took down number-seven St. FX 2-1 Friday night in Antigonish, before heading to Halifax Saturday night to complete their Nova Scotia road swing where the defending national champs handed UNB a 3-1 loss - their fifth of the season.

As for the Redmen, they dropped their lone game of the weekend on Saturday by a score of 3-0 against Carleton. The loss marked McGill's second consecutive, with both losses coming to Carleton in shutout fashion. The defending Queen's Cup champs will close out their regular season with a game at home against Ottawa, and then on the road against Concordia.

Rounding out the top three is Alberta who swept Regina this weekend to snap a three-game losing streak - the program's first since 1996. A 5-3 win Friday and a 4-1 victory Saturday propel the Bears back into the top three after a brief stint at number-four.

Best of the rest: Western Ontario holds down the four spot, a one spot slide from last week, after a 4-3 win over Windsor and then a surprising 3-0 to UOIT. The Mustangs wrap up their regular season this weekend against Brock and Guelph.

Saint Mary's moves up one spot in the poll this week after handing UPEI a 6-3 loss, and then downing the V-Reds at home on Saturday. Just behind the Halifax Huskies are the Sled Dogs from Saskatchewan who fall one spot this week despite a sweep of UBC over the weekend. The U of S Huskies streak into their battle this coming weekend against Alberta riding a five-game win streak, looking to bounce the Bears from top spot in Canada West.

St. FX holds the seventh spot, while a trio of newcomers round out the poll - Carleton, Calgary, and Acadia - are all in this week's top 10 after not being ranked a week ago.

Top 10 games this week: #4 Alberta at #6 Saskatchewan (Friday and Saturday), #1 UNB at #10 Acadia (Friday)
