Basketball: Assistant Olivieri given Lions' reins

York stayed in-house for its new men's basketball coach, with 13-year veteran assistant Tom Oliveri playing the Bill Guthridge to the retired Bob Bain's Dean Smith. Quoth Olivieri:
"After being part of the York University men's basketball family for the last 13 years, it is an exciting opportunity to build on the legacy of Bob Bain and the accomplishments of the program."

  1. It would have been a travesty if anyone else was chosen.
God knows Tom has waited long enough to finally get his chance...
a little too long I'd say, but that's another topic for another day.
Besides the obvious quality of loyalty to the program, Tom
can just flat out coach, as his track record with Mother Teresa and
the provincial youth teams amply demonstrates.
His extensive history coaching young players should stand him
in good stead, as York will have a very youthful, talented team next year.
Don't be at all surprised to see York have a meteoric rise in the
OUA East standings, comparable to Lakehead's turnaround this past year.
Several teams in their division will experience heavy graduation losses,
most notably Toronto, Ottawa and Queen's.
Look for the Lions to move past most if not all these teams.
