Hockey: CIS top 10 - UNB leapfrogs Alberta for top spot

For the first time this season, the Alberta Golden Bears no longer hold down the top spot in the CIS top 10 rankings after the UNB Varsity Reds took over as the nation's number-one team.

The Bears fell this weekend in a shootout Saturday night 3-2 at home against UBC after picking up a 5-2 win a night earlier, while the V-Reds picked up a pair of convincing shutout victories - 5-0 Friday against Dalhousie, and 6-0 Saturday versus Acadia.

The rest of the poll remains rather stable with Saint Mary's and Saskatchewan the only other two teams to move up the standings each improving by one spot in this week's poll.

1. UNB (13-4-0) / 171 pts (12) / (2)
2. Alberta (12-2-2) / 163 (4) / (1)
3. McGill (18-0-2) / 138 (2) / (3)
4. Saint Mary’s (12-4-1) / 125 / (5)
5. Western Ontario (14-1-3) / 109 / (4)
6. UPEI (10-5-2) / 68 / (6)
7. Saskatchewan (10-6-0) / 67 / (8)
8. Lakehead (13-4-1) / 52 / (7)
9. Manitoba (7-3-4) / 38 / (9)
10. UQTR (13-5-0) / 24 / (10)

Dropped from the top 10: No teams
Other teams receiving votes: StFX (14), Calgary (10), Wilfrid Laurier (6), Nipissing (3), Carleton (1), Guelph (1).

Top three tales: No surprise to see Alberta lose their number-one ranking after underwhelming performances against the T-Birds over the weekend in Edmonton. The loss marked the second home loss of the season for the Bears, as well as their second loss of the season to UBC who downed Alberta back in October in regulation on the west coast.

The V-Reds were the clear choice among voters for the top spot this week garnering 12 first place votes after two big wins in AUS conference play at home, while McGill holds down the third spot for the second consecutive poll. The Redmen scored a narrow 3-2 OT win this past Friday in Ottawa against the Gee-Gees, before securing a 6-2 road win versus Concordia the following night.

Top 10 games this weekend: Friday and Saturday - #8 Lakehead at #5 Western Ontario, #9 Manitoba at #7 Saskatchewan

  2. I should add that this game will be interesting if for no other than the fact that the Varsity Reds are riding a four-game shutout streak at home, while the Panthers feature the top offence in the AUS.

As well, the game will be the second Schools night of the season, which means hundreds and hundreds of kids pushing attendance to a sell-out. The game will thus have an uncharacteristicly loud din, especially when UNB scores. Can't wait.
