if you'll indulge a personal note: my brother bought his first home this year. Greg Marshall and Thérèse Quigley, now coach and AD at Western, laid all the groundwork in the 1990s and aughties for McMaster to go from underachiever to a bona fide football program.

When McMaster finally won the Vanier Cup in 2011, there was a narrative about how much this owed to Marshall. That did sort of take away from how Ptaszek, Behie and Knox instilled both a systemic shift and an attitude adjustment that enabled the Marauders to get by Laval in the 2011 Vanier Cup. The Marauders 1.0 that won four Yates Cups in a row dominated their conference mostly through ground-and-pound physical prowess, but that only got them so far. Of course, the narrative would be much, much different if McMaster had not had a potential game-winning touchdown pass sail just inches beyond a receiver's grasp against Laval in the 2003 Mitchell Bowl, which was Marshall's last game leading the Marauders.

Upon arrival in 2006, Ptaszek tweaked the offence to make it more about motion and misdirection. Knox also cultivated an attacking defence. When I disagree with Mike, I disagree with him. After reading some of the online things that were being said about Mike, I went on Facebook and said, 'I don't think he deserves some of the stuff that's being thrown at him.' I don't think the same way he does and I don't see the direction of the program the same way he does, but ultimately it was my job probably to bend more towards them because they're in charge, they're my bosses. It also shows how Carleton, bearing in mind there could be some growing pains in Year 1, is getting ready to hit the ground running (and presumbly passing a bit too, running the 'Canadian wishbone' only works at one OUA school and only up until they met their match physically). Baines' report also notes former Bishop's head coach Leroy Blugh, an eastern Ontario native who coached defensive line for Queen's last season, is a candidate to be defensive coordinator.

(Blugh, as you'll recall, went to Queen's to be closer to family in Napanee, Ont. That's two football coaches in two seasons, the other being Denis Piché who's now coaching CEGEP in Gatineau, who have left the post but decided to stay in the national capital region. Meantime, if/when Asselin joins the Ravens, he won't be the only former uOttawa sportsperson with a wardrobe of black-and-red warmup suits. Carleton AD Jennifer Brenning, of course, worked at Ottawa before crossing over. Women's hockey coach Shelley Coolidge and her staff migrated to Bronson Ave. a couple years back. Imagine: in 1999 Carleton folded the original Ravens team. Saint Mary's was in the Vanier Cup that fall. Ottawa won the next season. Saint Mary's then went back-to-back in 2001-02 with Sumurah serving ably as Blake Nill's offensive coordinator. Of course, Sumarah took that position.

Blugh, who interviewed for the SMU job yesterday, February 6th, has a reputation as a tenacious recruiter. Both pivots have the ability to make all the throws, and a few people believe that Creighton-lead SMU offence, while ultimately unsuccessful, gave McMaster the blueprint on how to beat Acadia in the Uteck Bowl. (Specifically, none of Acadia's opponents had thrown to the wide side of the field with great success until Saint Mary's did. In the Uteck, Mac exploited that weakness.)

Observers think Marchese may be able to mend some bridges with the Old Dogs, the Huskie football alumni, who largely did not approve of Sumarah’s firing.

It must be stated that just because Marchese and Sarty were former teammates does not means he will get the job. An honourable mention among "the others" is Andy McEvoy. McEvoy is (or was) an interesting candidate because the former York coach does have experience with a school similar to SMU. Unfortunately he did not have success there (though he was Ottawa's offensive coordinator during their 2000 Vanier Cup-winning season). He did succeed in the junior ranks, winning an Ontario title with the Ottawa Sooners in 2009. As well, Eastern Ontario is turning into a football hotbed, which did help him make it to the final five here with SMU. However, his CIS track record seems to hurt his chances of landing one of the league's premium coaching jobs. Hilson, who spent 12 years as Director of Marketing and Media Relations with McMaster Athletics before being let go last spring, had just taken a post at the University of Western Ontario as a Communications Specialist (with his old boss, former Mac AD Therése Quigley).

It's also a bit of a surprise, however, given that Hilson is moving up from a somewhat limited background in communications to the pretty big role of AD. He also worked at McMaster's department of University Advancement as well as Basketball Ontario and as a communications co-ordinator at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Now, a bit of disclosure: I worked with Hilson a lot in my first year as Sports Editor of the McMaster Silhouette and he was great to me. Whenever I needed photos or contact info for a coach or player, Rob was the guy to call, and he was without a doubt a big help. Still, it's a bit of a wild card selection for the Badgers to go with Hilson in what was (from what I'm told) a pretty competitive race.

One of the biggest implications of Hilson's selection is another job search: that of the Brock men's basketball coach. But now, the search has been re-opened and with Hilson at the helm (that sounds like a badass book title or something), one has to figure that the door is wide open for former Mac coach Joe Raso.

Hilson and Raso, who is one of the frontrunners for the Brock job, obviously worked together a lot at Mac, and it's not hard to imagine the two working together again (albeit in different roles). Raso has got as decorated a resumé as any available coach, and you've got to think this would make for a pretty fun Brock-Mac rivalry. This, of course, is entirely speculative, but will nonetheless be an interesting storyline that plays out over the summer.

With Hilson, the face of Brock Athletics has changed. That's what happened with the hiring of new Athletic Director Ian Reade, and while this is certainly up for debate, I would argue that after the AD, head coach of the Bears hockey program is the second most visible position within U of A athletics, and therefore all tools possible will be used to find the right person for the job.
