- Western — 1st, 1st, 2nd. They have clinched first place in Ontario [correction: assuming they beat York] no matter what you may read elsewhere about point differential coming into play with Guelph (by OUA rules, that is impossible). About to enjoy the coveted "bye week, York, bye week" portion of the schedule. There have been tougher times to be a Mustang, that's for sure...
- Laval — 2nd, 2nd, 1st. About a 2 to 1 split among voters who prefer Western to Laval up top. Hung a Waterloo score on Concordia. Kevin may prove to be the smarter one in the end here, and unless I'm mistaken he is the only one of the three of us who has personally lost to Laval.
- Calgary — 4th, 3rd, 4th. Considered moving them down after this week but couldn't find another team I liked better at 3.
- Guelph — 3rd, 6th, 3rd. Very difficult for me to assess where to put McMaster vs. Guelph. (Many reading this would say "Guelph's 6-0, don't overthink it" but that is underthinking it.) Thanks to scheduling quirks they will probably have only one common opponent who makes the playoffs. Last week I had Guelph 6th and McMaster 10th but after reviewing the evidence at hand I'm pushing them closer together. Still not sure I want to put the Gryphs above, say, Queen's or Calgary.
- Queen's — 6th, 4th, 5th. The all-important "playing for a bye week" game comes up one week after they roll out of bed 15 minutes before kickoff and beat Waterloo 54-12.
- Montreal — 5th, 5th, 8th. Maybe KG moved west to avoid the wrath of our blue-clad friends.
- Saskatchewan — 8th, 10th, 7th. I can report that actually watching an entire game of theirs didn't help figure out where to rank them.
- Bishop's — 7th, unranked, 6th. Have been outscored on the season, by nine points, though that will change after five minutes this week.
- McMaster — 9th, 7th, unranked. If only Neate and I could play as Bishop's and Mac on Madden and solve this. It's the only way these teams can play each other. However, that would require both of us to have a Madden game more recent than Tommy Maddox's career.
- Windsor — 10th, 9th, 9th. They've been on my ballot for the last five weeks in a row so this is either vindication or a coincidence.
Fun fact: the entire AUS received 0.4% [edit: not 2%] of the voting points available this week, all for SMU.

I have to agree with Kevin and Andrew, as I'm surprised Mac's still ranked, personally.
ReplyDeleteThe only game that they've really impressed me was the opener over Ottawa. Even Laurier managed to play Western and Queen's closer (both in score and actual level of play). They relied on 17 fourth-quarter points to limp to a win over York. I would not be surprised to see the Marauders get upset on the road tomorrow, at which point I expect they'll fall out. While I'm making baseless guesses, I'll then predict a win over Carleton, and a one-and-done performance in the playoffs, as long as they play anyone other than the Gee-Gees. If this is how it plays out, it's not really top-10 quality, is it?
Of course, the other issue is that I have no idea who else is worthy of being ranked in their place...Sherbrooke? I know Kevin's 10th place vote stayed hidden, who'd he have?
"If this is how it plays out" is the key assumption there. Obviously if a team loses all of its remaining games except the one against the first-year program, then yeah, maybe they shouldn't be among the best in the country. But that is very close to the worst-case scenario for Mac.
DeleteMy argument rests on strength of schedule, as it has all year. Guelph still has played just two .500-or-better teams. On top of that, they've won those two games by a total of three points.
And Kevin put Sherbrooke 10th, so the four of us had four different teams in that spot.
