Hockey: AUS Quarter-Final Playoffs

This week no snark, lame attempts at humour or potentially biased opinions. Just the facts. I'll try to update this post as the AUS men's hockey quarter-finals play out.

#3 StFX (17-10-1) vs. #6 Dalhousie (13-15-0)

Game 1: In Antigonish Thursday night, co-captain Chris Hulit led the X-Men with two goals in 4-0 blanking of the Tigers. Joey Perricone got the shutout for "X". Shots were 39-14 in favour of StFX. While I did watch the webcast, I'll refrain from imposing my opinions of the game play. If you are not offended by a frank assessment of the game, you could read what knowledgeable observer AUS Fan has to say in post #10 over at HF Boards. Game 2 in this series is Saturday at 2:00 pm in Halifax.

Game 2: Dal in front of a big crowd Saturday afternoon in their first home playoff game in seven years took a one goal lead into the third period, but were outscored three goals to one in the final period, with the dagger a goal by Jason Bast with 10 seconds to go in the game, after the X-Men won a key faceoff in the Dal zone. StFX wins 3-2 and will advance to play the Saint Mary's Huskies in a best-of-five AUS semi-final series. AUS Fan has another game recap, post #21.

#4 Acadia (14-11-3) vs. #5 UPEI (14-11-3)

Game 1: The only goal Friday night in Wolfville came from Acadia's Scott Tregunna at 15:48 of the second period. The Axemen outshot the Panthers 36-26 in the game and Kristofer Westblom got the shutout for Acadia. Game 2 is Saturday night at 7:30 pm in Charlottetown.

Game 2: In Charlottetown, the second game was almost a carbon copy of game one. Acadia's Scott Tregunna scored at 5:05 of the first period, the only goal in the game. The Panthers outshot the Axemen 31-24 and once again Kristofer Westblom got the shutout for Acadia. The Axemen will now advance to play UNB in the other best-of-five semi-final series.

Note: #1 UNB (23-5-0) will open at home against Acadia, and #2 SMU (18-9-1) will play host to StFX. Both semi-final series should start on Friday.

[Update: UNB will indeed open at home Friday night followed by game 2 Saturday night, but SMU will open at StFX on Friday night, since the Halifax Forum is being used for the Canada Games. SMU will then be home Sunday and Tuesday.]

  1. Dave, you do a good job and even those who may not like your POV still appreciate the fact that you take the time to write about the AUS. Please keep writing the only way you know how and please don't get "so" offended when people call you on your bias. On a national blog such as this a little sensitivity/consideration would be appreciated. That's all.

As a STU fan I can tell you that I am hurting, I'm not alone, so I'll be the first to tell you that I can read a lot into what you are writing. That being said, boo hoo for us, you should keep your writing style in tact but not be surprised (or overly offended) by people wanting to have their side of the story told how they think it should be told.

Good luck moving forward in the AUS playoffs and CIS championship.
