Women's Basketball: First National Top 10 Tracker

The CIS Top 10 National Coaches Poll 2010-2011 Rankings have finally been posted (insert emphatic thunderbolt here). As such, it seems more than appropriate for our first Top 10 Tracker of the season; so, without further ado, here's how the top squads fared in league play this past week.

All game stats and scores are available from the CIS website.

The Top 10 Teams are:

1. Windsor Lancers
2. Victoria Vikes
3. Regina Cougars
4. Western Ontario Mustangs
5. UNB Varsity Reds
6. Saskatchewan Huskies
7. Carleton Ravens
8. Laval Rouge et Or
9. Cape Breton Capers
10. Acadia Axewomen

1. Windsor

(Editor's note: this is an exhibition tournament, as the East teams will not begin league play until next week, but let's be honest -- everyone wants to hear how the Lancers are doing.)

After easily sweeping their Alberta tournament, the Lancers fared equally well (perhaps even more so) in the Don Grant Memorial Tournament in Moncton, NB. Despite taking a 47-35 deficit into the dressing room at half, Jessica Clemençon's ridiculous 33-point and 13-board performance against the host Varsity Reds, together with Iva Peklova's and Bojana Kovacevic's 21 and 17 respectively, led the Lancers to tournament gold after knocking off their previous competition in similar fashion: 74-63 over Acadia and a 75-48 trouncing of St. Mary's (tournament recap is available here).

The Lancers have not yet begun league play.

2. Victoria and 6. Saskatchewan

The Vikes completed a sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies on the road this past weekend, defeating the green and white 77-73 on Friday and 72-65 the next night. Kayla Dykstra scored 18 of her game-high 20 points in the second half on Friday, and Carmen Lapthorne topped the stats sheet with 25 the next night. The Huskies fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Vikes remain undefeated at 4-0.

3. Regina

The Cougars swept the Brandon Bobcats in stunning fashion this past weekend, with a 40-point 92-52 differential on Saturday and a triple-digit 106-37 thumping on Friday night. Vanessa Wesolowski, Joanna Zalesiak, and Carly Graham shared the scoreboard at 17, 16 and 16 points apiece on Saturday night, while Brandon rookie Madison Bradbury led all scorers with 20.

The remaining top 10 teams will open their league schedules next week.
