Basketball: Fourth-year Fraser Valley men earn first playoff berth

It has all come circle for Fraser Valley. The fourth-year Cascades are headed to the playoffs for the first time and as coach Barnaby Craddock noted, it was even sweeter to clinch vs. their rivals from the Lower Mainland, Trinity Western:
"It's definitely a little more gratifying when you feel your program's been overlooked. To start the season, there was definitely a lot of hype down the road in Langley, and high expectations. We just quietly went about our business, and the guys worked hard in practice every day. We're pretty proud of the basketball product that we've put on the floor, and I think it speaks for itself."
Forward Kyle Grewal, as noted by the Abby News (no idea if anyone calls it that), held last season's CIS player of the year Jacob Doerksen to single-digit scoring in each game. That's no easy task.

The Cascades, 11th in RPI, will draw Saskatchewan (12th in RPI) and Showron Glover in what stacks up as the most intriguing of the four presumptive Canada West quarter-final series. In the 1-vs.-4 matchups, UBC should handle Alberta and it's hard to see Calgary losing twice at home to either Trinity Western or Victoria (famous last words). In the other 2-vs.-3 matchup, Regina lost by 15 to Simon Fraser in their only meeting, but if their shooters get rolling, you never know.

  1. It is not yet decided if UVic or Trinity will even be in the Canada West Playoffs. It could well be the University of Lethbridge instead who could also end up at .500. There is one spot for either 5th in the Priarie or 4th in the Pacific this year.
