Football
- Dual-threat QB Erik Glavic is Calgary's nominee to be Canada West's nominee for the Hec Crighton Trophy. It says that after a season where he averaged 11 yards per pass attempt and 10 yards per rush, he should be at the front of the line. It would be unprecedented to have a player win at two different schools, to go along with his win at Saint Mary's in 2007.
(Nominating only one player per team is kind of rigid. Calgary's Anthony Parker is more deserving than a lot of other teams' best player.) (Calgary Herald)
- Seriously, is Laval beatable in the QUFL playoffs? Radio-Canada's Jacques Dussault believes they might be. (Radio-Canada, en francais)
- Allez Les Bleus tees up the other Q semifinal, Bishop's-Montreal.
- Queen's QB Dan Brannagan and McMaster running back Joey Nemet played minor football together as lads. (Hamilton Spectator)
Basketball
- The awesome Monty Mosher outlines AUS men's basketball, starting with the redeem team at St. Francis Xavier. Cape Breton is good as advertised by that 9-1 pre-season, Dalhousie has Simon Farine (got him in the MUBL!) and don't you dare take your eyes off of talented Saint Mary's. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald)
- Despite the best efforts, it appears this site is being "taken serious" in some quarters: A tbnewswatch feature on the Lakehead Thunderwolves women's team referenced us:
"The CIS Blog, a website well respected within the university sports community, has the team ranked 10th in its preseason poll, heights unheard of for a team usually in the hunt for one of the final OUA playoff berths, not a national championship."
Hockey
- Has anyone heard the UBC Thunderbirds' new fight song, Hail UBC? (press release)
- Nipissing has its own (future) policeman, hulking 6-foot-1, 225-lb. defenceman Josh McKinnon. (Bay Today)
- Mike Treadgold has a solid article in the Guelph student paper calling for more respect for women's sports, including the Gryphons' hockey team, who were 6th in RPI last year. (The Ontarion)
Soccer
- Small world: Cape Breton striker Keishen Bean played this summer with the Ottawa Fury of the Premier Development League. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald)
I think they played it (the UBC fight song) at the end of the UBC-TWU mens basketball game last weekend. But to be honest, I didn't give it much thought. Meh.

ReplyDeleteRB Matt Walter of Calgary would have been another Dino player deserving to be Hec Creighton nominee.
The UBC fight song was also performed at the Big Block Athletic Awards in Vancouver last year. Not sure what to make of the non-reaction from the hundreds of athletes, coaches and other dignitaries. The song itself is ok, but is more rousing than the original "Hail UBC."
