Linking the country ...

Quickly now, there are people who want to channel-surf between early NFL games and Magic-Raptors on CBC:

Football
  • There should be a study of why attendance was so down. Saskatchewan, for instance, was the only Canada West team to average 2,000 fans (which it did twice over.) (Huskies Football Outsider)

  • Laval QB Benoit Groulx set QUFL single-season and career records for TD passes, impressive considering the injuries he had. He actually tied the season mark of 18 set by Ottawa's Phill Côté.

Not to nostalgia-wallow, but Côté set a record for throwing TDs one season and set a record for rushing TDs the next. (Le Soleil)

  • Maxime Béland is quite the multi-purpose "motorboat" (literal translation) for No. 1 Laval. (Le Soleil)

  • Ottawa QB Brad Sinopoli "a much better day on the field than (McMaster QB Kyle) Quinlan and maybe deserved a better fate" than the Gee-Gees' 27-15 loss, notes the Ottawa Citizen.

Quinlan's late TD to Jordan Kozina gave him a a yards-per-pass of 8.2 (22 for 180) to Sinopoli's 6.3 (54 for 342). The team which wins that category wins about 75% of the time, although Sinopoli had dropped passes and penalties cut down his numbers.

  • Canada West rushing champ Matt Walter finally got a full week of practice in before busting off 169 yards vs. Alberta on Saturday. (Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun)

  • Allez Les Bleus looks at No. 9 Montréal's narrow 14-9 win over Sherbrooke; since it's election day in Quebec, how about some rookie of the year votes for Carabins running back Rotrand Sené?

  • Queen's assistant coach Bob Vespaziani, who coached Acadia in its football glory days in the 1970s, is marking 50 years in coaching/management. (Kingston Whig-Standard)
Basketball
  • Alberta coach Greg Francis has only five holdovers from last season on the roster, so almost everything is new with the Golden Bears. (Edmonton Journal)

  • A lot of basketball, West Coast-style, to catch up on. (Little Man on Campus)

  • Yes, yes, go ahead and gloat: Calgary crushed Winnipeg by more than 40 points Saturday, which just shows you how high the Dinos will be in the Top 20 capsules. (cishoops.ca)
Media
  • Robert Carnell at CFRC 101. 9 is one of the unsung heroes of the Kingston media, since he serves as technical producer for Golden Gaels radio broadcasts. What most listeners do not know is Rob works an 11 p.m.-7 a.m. shift at his regular job every Friday night, forces himself to stay awake and then goes to CFRC to make sure the game gets on the air. He finally gets some shuteye around 5 p.m.

Rob, who's a Newfoundlander, hosts a show about East Coast music called Salt Water Music.

  1. Naete, I have to correct a mistake you made. That Ottawa Citizen story you linked to says, "Matthew Falvo had touchdowns of 37, 22 and 22-yards." I think it sohould say field goals since Falvo is the Gee-Gee's kicker. Try to be more careful in the future.

  2. Actually, it's "Neate" and "should" and "Gee-Gees'" there. Try to be more careful...oh, never mind.

  3. Speaking of Hec nominees, if people can suggest players they think should win, we can take a closer look at the numbers (like this but better). Groulx, Glavic, and Ross are three names already on the list...

  4. Once again, Ottawa squanders scoring opportunities.
Piche called his team's effort 'flat"....how can you play flat in a playoff game?
    Inexcusable.
