Morning rounds ...

Football
  • Voters in the CIS/UFRC Top 10 got an extra seven hours to deliberate over their ballots. Feel free to attack the voters who believe in full disclosure! (UFRC)

  • Everything you wanted to read about "Bleu Sunday." (Allez Les Bleus)

  • Western coach Greg Marshall said his staff was "outcoached" vs. McMaster. He always knows what to say, that one. (Hamilton Spectator)

  • Zach Hart was a pass-rush terror in No. 7 Saskatchewan's win at Simon Fraser. (Huskies Football Outsider)

  • Queen's coach Pat Sheahan felt the Golden Gaels had "some inconsistency" against Windsor, but they are 5-0 nevertheless. Running back Jimmy Therrien's knee might be a concern. (Kingston Whig-Standard)

  • What was with all the long passes Laurier threw in the second half vs. Ottawa? (Always OUA)
Hockey
  • Among the noteworthy pre-season scores: Western beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 in overtime on Sunday, with Kevin Baker scoring the game-winner for coach Clarke Singer's Mustangs.

  • Cathy Chartrand was the woman of the hour, scoring the overtime winner in McGill's 2-1 win over Vermont. Vanessa Davidson assisted on both Martlets markers to help the two-time national champs improve to 3-0 this season vs. Hockey East opponents.

Losing to both CIS champions serves Vermont right, if only because the FOX affiliate out of Burlington started showing TMZ instead of Seinfeld at 11:30 p.m. on weeknights.

  • Also of note from the QSSF women's league: Carleton was 6-0-0 vs. OUA opponents during pre-season. Coach Shelley Coolidge's last three teams at Ottawa all played at nationals. By the way, UOIT's Jessica Larabie had 47 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.
Basketball
  • cishoops.ca has notes on some of the weekend non-conference action.
Media coverage
  • Mike Hogan of The FAN 590, as big a booster of CIS football as there is in all captivity, enjoyed a huge ratings jump during the July-August period.
"It was a good summer for Mike Hogan and Mike Toth, whose Bullpen ratings jumped from 1.6 to 4.2."
There probably is no cause-and-effect between Hogan's devotion to university football and the ratings boost, but it's nice to think that maybe focusing on the little guys had a salutary effect on the audience. (Sports Media Watch)

  1. Have spoken on air with Mike Hogan several times in last year or two, mainly about OUA/CIS football, including Monday after Western/McMaster Homecoming game. Knows his stuff about the whole CIS in addition to his duties as Argo PBP announcer and regular Bullpen radio show. First class radio guy that will even return errant email missives from wannabe media types like myself. Congrats to Hogan and Tother(who himself goes to Varsity Blues games when he can).
