Hockey

• Among the noteworthy pre-season scores: Western beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 in overtime on Sunday, with Kevin Baker scoring the game-winner for coach Clarke Singer's Mustangs.
  
  
• Cathy Chartrand was the woman of the hour, scoring the overtime winner in McGill's 2-1 win over Vermont. Vanessa Davidson assisted on both Martlets markers to help the two-time national champs improve to 3-0 this season vs. Hockey East opponents.
  
  Losing to both CIS champions serves Vermont right, if only because the FOX affiliate out of Burlington started showing TMZ instead of Seinfeld at 11:30 p.m. on weeknights.
  
  
• Also of note from the QSSF women's league: Carleton was 6-0-0 vs. OUA opponents during pre-season. Coach Shelley Coolidge's last three teams at Ottawa all played at nationals. By the way, UOIT's Jessica Larabie had 47 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Ravens on Sunday.

Media coverage

• Mike Hogan of The FAN 590, as big a booster of CIS football as there is in all captivity, enjoyed a huge ratings jump during the July-August period.

  "It was a good summer for Mike Hogan and Mike Toth, whose Bullpen ratings jumped from 1.6 to 4.2."

  There probably is no cause-and-effect between Hogan's devotion to university football and the ratings boost, but it's nice to think that maybe focusing on the little guys had a salutary effect on the audience. (Sports Media Watch)
