Linking the country... like those headlines well-done

Football
  • St. FX's loss to Bishop's makes the X-Men-Saint Mary's Huskies game in Halifax next week a play-in for home-field advantage for the Loney Bowl. No need to get into point differential! (Halifax Chronicle-Herald)

  • How sweet is it that Montreal Alouettes fullback Mike Giffin (Queen's) scored his first TD vs. the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who released him in 2008? (Kingston Whig-Standard)

  • Queen's quarterback Dan Brannagan "sure looks like a deserving candidate for the Hec Crighton Trophy" after pulling off a second last-minute win this season, writes Whig sports editor Mike Koreen.

  • Mac coach Stefan Ptaszek had a choice line for the bizarre ending to the Marauders' 15-14 OT win over Windsor, telling the Hamilton Spectator, "It seemed like the only flag that went our way ended the game."

Special teamer Dylan Roesch-Crane was the hero for being clipped in the end zone by Windsor's Colin Dixon.

McMaster (5-2) had 21 penalties and eight turnovers in a span of nine possessions and still could not win.

  • "Hot dogs don't rate hamburgers" is the CIS-related headline of the year, hands down. Excellent job, Winnipeg Free Press!
"(Manitoba coach Brian) Dobie's patience reached its breaking point as a few of his players straggled in from the alumni tent, downing free hamburgers with one hand, and holding a cold beverage with the other.

" 'I don't want us ever to accept not being the best that we can be,' he said following his dressing down of the team. 'It's not just about not accepting losing. It's more than that. I am disappointed in some of the (player) reaction at the end.

" 'I want our program to be represented with class. I want everyone in the program to show each other how much pride they take in winning, and how much they care about losing. That was what that talk was about in there.' "
  • Wideout Spencer Watt catching a touchdown pass Simon Fraser's 30-1 Shrum Bowl win over UBC was fitting, since he's one of many fourth-year Clan athletes whose career might be truncated by the NCAA move. (Vancouver Province)

  • Ottawa defensive lineman Sébastien Tetreault is active with True Sport Foundation (who knows how the article ended up identifying him as a wide receiver, which is about as far from D-tackle as it gets.) (Ottawa Citizen)

  • The best post-game quote from Guelph coach Kyle Walters is buried in the 10th paragraph ("The defence plays well, the offence stinks. The offence plays well, the defence stinks. Special teams – some weeks we are so inconsistent and that’s the most frustrating thing, the inconsistency”). Who are any of us to tell an OMD how to write for a 2009 audience? (Guelph Mercury, Waterloo Region Record)
Hockey
  • Evan Daum might be able to expand on this, but bet you did not see UBC getting off to a 3-0-1 start in Canada West. (Little Man on Campus)

  • UOIT goalie Jason Guy had 51 saves in regulation and overtime during UOIT's 6-5 upset shootout win over Lakehead on Saturday. UOIT over Lakehead, who expected that? (Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal)
Basketball
  • Carleton's fab frosh forward, Tyson Hinz, had a great weekend at the Ravens' House-Laughton tournament, writes the superb Wayne Kondro. The Ravens scored 293 points in the three games. (Ottawa Citizen)

  • Waterloo also won its Naismith tournament last season, but their early-season play might be portent of how it might play out on the parquet. With four fifth-year starters, watch out for the Warriors. They beat Toronto and Acadia on the weekend. (cishoops.ca, Waterloo Region Record)

  • cishoops.ca has summaries from most men's games. A lot of tournaments to follow!

  1. Among the many accomplishments of Dave Smart, what has always impressed me is his ability to alter his lineup seamlessly year after year, despite sometimes heavy graduation losses.
This year's edition is a perfect example of that.
Losing 3 senior starters with 15 years of cumulative experience would devastate most teams.
    But with Carleton, no problem.
Out goes Doornekamp, Saunders and Turnbull in comes Willie Manigat and Tyson Hinz.
Along with seniors Kevin McCleery and Mike Kenny, who hasn't even played yet, and younger vets like Cole Hobin, Anthony Ashe and Elliot Thompson, the Ravens are locked and loaded again.
The word "rebuild" doesn't exist with this crew.

  5. If it weren't for Saskatchewan's poor start out west, the UBC Thunderbirds would be the story of this young Canada West season. I thought UBC would be better, but I didn't see a start this good coming.

The Thunderbirds have been sparked by newcomer Justin McCrae who is tied for the league lead in goals with four. The former Spokane Chief was dynamite against the Manitoba Bisons over the weekend with three goals. In net Francois Thuot has taken the number-one job and ran with it. Last season Thuot split with Gerry Festa, but knowing he's going to play game in game out has seemed like a positive for Thuot. Milan Dragecevic has the T-Birds off to their best start under his leadership. Brandon Campos who had an injury-plagued season last year is healthy, and producing with three goals and two assists thus far. With a pair of wins over the Bisons this weekend, UBC proved that they will be more than just a thorn in the side of the conference's elite.
