Linking the country ... Sherby vs. Montréal; quick-healing Idonije; new deal for SMU's Stienburg

Football
  • Allez Les Bleus tees up the weekend for the QUFL clubs, including a trap game for the No. 1-ranked Montréal Carabins vs. Sherbrooke. The game boils down to Gregory Alexandre and the Carabins defence vs. the Q's leading rusher, Pascal Fils. The Vert et Or (2-3) are going to cash in their red-zone chances sooner or later, or so you might think.

  • Huskies Football Outsider asked fans to call Shaw Saskatoon and urge it to pick up the U of S Huskies-Manitoba Bisons tilt, which airs Saturday. It looks like Shaw will comply.

(If it was Rogers they would say, "We can't show weakness to the enemy, excuse me, customers.")

  • "Once in a generation" slotback Andy Fantuz (Western), as you heard, re-signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He hasn't squashed his NFL dream, though. (Regina Leader-Post, Rider Rumblings)

  • Lots of happenings with the Kingston natives on the Roughriders. Rob Bagg (Queen's) was running some plays at slotback and linebacker Mike McCullough (St. FX) was named the CFL's Canadian of the week.

  • The Golden Gaels might not "play like Queen's" — a little Region-al humour for ya there — but no doubt some people could make a joke out of players getting physiotherapy from the same health professional who treats Olympic figure skater Tessa Virtue.
"Olympic figure skater Tessa Virtue isn’t the only big star that gets her physiotherapy treatments from Mary Brannagan at Tecumseh’s Loaring Physiotherapy & Health Centre. Brannagan regularly travels to Kingston for her nephew Dan Brannagan's games to attend to his and his teammates' physio needs."
    (Windsor Star)

  • Manitoba Bisons alum Israel Idonije was back at practice with the Chicago Bears only 10 days after arthroscopic surgery. (Chicago Tribune)
Hockey
  • Saint Mary's coach Trevor Steinburg, who has a shot at his 200th career win this season,
has signed a five-year contract extension ... seems to come to mind that UNB's Gardiner MacDougall re-upped for five seasons fairly recently. Completely unrelated! (Metro Canada)

  • It's like you could learn more about the Toronto Varsity Blues from the North Bay Nugget than any paper in the GTA.

  • Three one-goal games last night in men's hockey, how about that! Steve Whitely, who had scored on a penalty shot in regulation, got the decider in Waterloo's5-4 OT win over Laurier ... Western's new goalie, Anthony Grieco, stopped all 36 shots he faced in a relief effort to help the Mustangs beat Guelph 4-3 despite being outshot by a margin of two ... Lethbridge also earned a 4-3 shootout win over Calgary without benefit of an even-strength goal.
Basketball
  • Don't be too hasty to write off the Quebec conference. Laval lost by only two points, 80-78, on UBC's floor last night.

Southpaw point guard Josh Whyte took over down the stretch for the T-Birds and hit the decider with two seconds left. Don't look so shocked! (cishoops.ca)

  • Another pre-season tilt of note: Lien Phillip had a big game in Windsor's 79-70 win over UFV.

  • cishoops.ca (when does Mark sleep?) also looks at defending AUS champ Dalhousie's 77-67 win over Guelph (Simon Farine and Sandy Viet each had 22 for the Tigers). The Gryphons are now without a key defender, Charles Ageymang, who's focusing on academia.

  • Remember Stefano Mancinelli, who cheap-shotted Carleton grad Aaron Doornekamp during an Italy-Canada hoops friendly back in the summer? FIBA gave Mancinelli a two-game suspension.

  • Two of the podium teams from last season's women's Final 8 have a new look. Regina lost seven players of its silver medal-winning team. They went 1-2 at a tourney last week, with the win coming over last year's bronze medallist, Alberta. (Regina Leader-Post)

  • Kayla Dykstra and the veteran UVic Vikes remember well that they were probably good enough to go to the Final 8 last season, but missed out. (Victoria Times-Colonist)

  • life-athletics.com talks with Carleton women's coach Taffe Charles about how sports reveals character.

  1. That's a shame about Charles in Guelph. That kid was coming around big time last year. Huge leaping ability. Knew his role and was good at it. Too bad.

And Latka not playing at seven-feet tall is a shame. Guelph always needs height.

  2. Was at the WLU-UW game, the Warriors play such a horrible game of hockey, it's slow, sloppy, and defensive, and all their goals are on tips and deflections and the game-changer was a phantom penalty shot given to the Warriors. Thorner did not have a clear lane to the net or any strides on the laurier defender, but he still got a penalty shot. I cover CIS soccer and hockey for my school and im constantly appauled at how poor and ill-trained referees in this league continue to decide games.

I wish i went to an AUS school...
