Linking the country ... can't spell 'tune' without U-T; Ryerson's Rana readies for debut

Football
  • You know how the new show Glee has a character who's a football player but likes to perform in musicals? U of T rookie lineman Corey Hafezi is that guy. (Toronto Star)

  • All you needed to know about Friday's Simon Fraser-Regina game, which likely means the playoffs for the victor. (RodPederson.com)

  • Running back Matt Burke, DB Jermaine Gabriel, receiver Duraney White and O-lineman Ryan White are having solid first seasons at Bishop's. (Versus Québec)

  • That promise not to mock the Guelph Mercury is going to get harder to keep if it doesn't stop writing stuff such as, "The Gee-Gees will be out to prove they can win at home, something they haven’t done this season. They’ve lost 32-17 to Western and 20-8 to Queen’s at Frank Clair Stadium." Perhaps those losses had something to do with which teams it played, crazy suggestion, I know.

That is on par with a (now former) Ottawa reporter who suggested last season Laurier should "start making excuses now to avoid showing up" after the Gee-Gees beat York and Waterloo by large scores at home. It never ceases to amaze how some OMDs get paid to cover a story and never learn anything about the leagues.

The Golden Hawks won the game, too.
Hockey
  • Apparently that wasn't hot air about Guelph coach Shawn Camp having a great recruiting class. Rookie rookie forward Thomas Kiriakou bagged four goals — the rare mortarboard trick — in the Gryphons' regular-season opening 8-5 win over UOIT.

  • North Bay Nugget sportswriter Ken Pagan will liveblog from the rink during each of the Nipissing Lakers' road games this week vs. UQTR and Concordia. (Sun Media)
Basketball
  • cishoops.ca has a rundown on the night's non-conference action.

  • The AUS Final 6 will be played at Centre 200 in Sydney, N.S., this March. Perhaps this will lead to more schools outside the hub city of Halifax getting a chance to host a great event.

(The quotes from federal cabinet minister Peter MacKay did not pass the sniff test, knowing what great friends the government of the day has been to summer sports, including basketball.)

  • Ryerson coach Roy Rana talks about the Rams' exhibition opener vs. McMaster.
