Linking the country ... AUS drops puck on hockey season; Lee a coach's headache, and some Western-Queen's hoopla

Hockey
  • Saint Mary's is loaded and St. FX, Dalhousie and Acadia are each a bit on the young side when it comes to the AUS' four Nova Scotia hockey teams. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald)

  • Scary thought: What if UNB had had Daine Todd in the lineup all of last season? The speedy forward missed the whole year with a shoulder injury, but he's back. (Fredericton Daily Gleaner)

  • Versatile forward Kenton Dulle, who was in an AHL training camp, has landed with the St. Thomas Tommies right on the eve of the AUS season. (Fredericton Daily Gleaner)

  • Adam Sergerie and Andy Hyvarinen are both giving the Lakehead Thunderwolves secondary scoring after being in and out of the lineup last season. (tbnewswatch)
Football
  • Wally Buono, speaking of running back Jamall Lee (Bishop's), "I'm going to go under the premise Jamall is a good tailback and I'm going to make him prove me right or wrong."

Roster management in the CFL can be pretty byzantine. In a simpler world, trying to figure out how to use a talent such as Jamall Lee would not be a coach's headache. Worrying about having Lee calls to mind a line from Superbad that decorum prohibits quoting (maybe in the comments).

  • Toronto Sun baseball reporter Bob Elliott (born in Kingston, father of a Queen's alumna) and Toronto Blue Jays interim CEO Paul Beeston (Western class of '67) are taking playful shots at each other during the lead-up to the Showdown in Penitentiary Town (hip bump to Morris Dalla Costa).

Beeston: "We'll never lose the game, we'll just run out of time." That's big talk from fourth place (in the AL East, not the OUA). (Kingston Whig-Standard)

  • Not CIS, but there is precedent for putting a one-loss team ahead of an unbeaten team in the national rankings. (The Sporting Blog)

  • Another big game is No. 7 Saskatchewan at Manitoba on Saturday. The Huskies and Bisons have the best records in Canada West since the start of the 2000s. (Saskatoon Star-Phoenix)

  • Receivers Gabriel Bernard-Perron and Maxime Lépinay have made strides during a sometimes-frustrating, injury-plagued season for Sherbrooke. (Versus Québec)

  • Laval's Babacar Sèye was a good back in Quebec's CEGEP AAA league, but he's done a little bit of everything for the Rouge et Or. (Le Soleil)
Basketball
  • McMaster forward Keenan Jeppesen, who helped Western reach the Final 8 semifinal each of the last two seasons, is confident about the Marauders' chances. (The Hoop-la)

  • cishoops.ca looks at the AUS, which has begun its exhibition season. The young but insanely good Acadia Axemen are at the Waterloo Warriors tournament this weekend, which is a good test for them.

  • Carleton Ravens guard Willy Manigat, who played at Ottawa from 2005-07, relates how he initially picked the downtown university since he was close with then-Ravens stars Osvaldo Jeanty and Jean-Emmanuel Jean-Marie. Now he's at Carleton, focused on earning his political science degree and maybe playing for a national title.

Carleton has UPEI, Bishop's and Saskatchewan in it for its annual House-Laughton tournament. Games are at 6 and 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, noon and 2 p.m. Sunday. (Sun Media)

  • UPEI is obviously looking forward to its trip to Ottawa for Carleton's House-Laughton tournament.

  1. Uh, you completely misunderstood the gist of the Soleil article.

  2. Does it meet with your approval now? I apologize, my French comprehension is poor at best.

  3. Seye plays for Laval, not Sherbrooke. Other than that, your understanding is correct!

  4. Nice. I'm at the point where I'm going to have to write 'L' and 'R' on the bottom of each shoe.

This is not an excuse, but the photo was of Seye making a tackle vs. Sherby ... the previous item I linked to was about Sherby, somehow "Sherbrooke" replaced "Laval" and "Vert" replaced "Rouge." Clearly, I have too much on my mind, or not enough (like a working knowledge of French).

  5. God, Sager is already campaigning for a certain un-named, one-loss team to be ranked number one. Anyone who reads this blog knows he's not talking about Laval.

    I suppose subtly isn't a Queens’s prerequisite, eh.

  6. You're right. You're so right. It says, "There is precedent for putting a one-loss team ahead of an unbeaten team in the national rankings."

    Sager's Top 5 this week and last: One-loss Montréal, one-loss Laval, one-loss Calgary ahead of so-far-unbeaten Queen's.

Why would someone campaign for Queen's to be No. 1 and then vote it No. 4? It is a strange strategy, to say the least. That's like trying to elect a Democrat by voting Republican.

If you read The Sporting Blog post, it notes several writers are arguing against Boise State being up in the NCAA polls because of its soft schedule. That's analogous, is it not, to what some outside Ontario say about Queen's and the OUA and what some west of Fredericton say about St. FX and the AUS.

There was no ulterior motive other than to give people a good read. Apparently, someone overdid on the subtlety.

  7. Nice story on Manigat, Sager. I'm amazed you put down the Queens Koolaid long enough to write it, tho.
