Top 10 Fail

Voters this week in the CIS/UFRC Top 10 poll had the option to list as few as six teams, which is good since after No. 6, it's a crapshoot:
  1. Laval Rouge et Or (3-0) — Until someone knocks them off. This week: vs. Bishop's (Sunday).

  2. Western Mustangs (3-0) — Ibid, see No. 1. Next week: At Guelph (1 p.m. ET Saturday on The Score; there might be livebloggage too).

  3. Saskatchewan Huskies (2-0) — They had the week off. And there ain't no bye week party like a Detroit Lions fan's bye week party. This week: At Alberta (Friday).

  4. Calgary Dinos (2-1) — This week: vs. Simon Fraser (3 p.m. ET, Saturday, on FAN 960).

  5. Montréal Carabins (2-1) — In the words of Meg Griffin, "Are we just going to pretend like none of this ever happened?" They did hold the score down vs. Laval despite being one-dimensional on offence. This week: vs. Acadia.

  6. Queen's Golden Gaels (3-0) — "Gaels in touchdown denial" was this morning's Whig-Standard headline. Queen's next three opponents are all 2008 non-playoff teams. This week: vs. York.

  7. St. Francis Xavier X-Men (2-0) — Their inter-locking game vs. an 0-3 Concordia team might say a lot about the strength of their respective conferences. A more alarmist way to put it is that the future of interlocking play might be riding on the outcome! (Or not). This week: At Concordia.

  8. Saint Mary's Huskies (1-1) — Putting SMU ahead of SFU might just be borne from being wary about availability bias. I've watched the Clan play live (they videocast) and have not had the privilege with the eastern Huskies. Simon Fraser looks pretty fast on defence, so-so on offence.

  9. Simon Fraser Clan (2-1) — Go down two spots from last week's Top 10 fail after a double-digit loss at home to Alberta (which might be the country's best 1-2 team, at least west of Lennoxville, Que.). This week: at Calgary.

  10. Sherbrooke (2-1)— Guelph is awfully tempting with the offensive numbers it is posting, but Sherby's two wins were over teams which have made the playoffs since the end of George W. Bush's first term. Of course, the V&O's loss snapped someone else's nation's longest losing streak, so it's complicated, like Avril Lavigne's relationship status on Facebook.

Both the Vert et Or and Gryphons face defending conference champions this week, so it's a put-up-or-shut-up.

Voters should not make choices based on what they think might happen, but Laurier (2-1) has an injury to its starting QB.

    This week: At Saint Mary's.

  1. Ottawa U has got to be the dumbest football team in the known universe.
They were handed a golden opportunity to beat a Queens team that were without its #1 QB.
Chapdelaine was shaky, barely adequate to do the job.
But Ottawa basically handed them the game's only TD on a drive aided by a whopping 55 yards in penalties.
A drive that should have stalled long before Queen's reached the end zone if not for the Gee Gees blatant stupidity.
Among those penalties was an objectionable conduct levied on the coaches.
Offensively, Ottawa ruined several promising drives with dumb penalties.
I lay the blame for this directly on Piche and his staff...if he can't discipline himself how can one expect to be control his players?
And BTW...the announced crowd was just over 2,000 and much of that were Queens supporters.
    Pretty, sad really.
