Morning rounds ...

Football
  • The No. 4 Calgary Dinos believe they have shot themselves in the foot a bit through the first two games. (Calgary Herald)

  • B.C. Lions long snapper Dan McCullough (Bishop's) had his jersey retired by his high school in Fredericton. (Daily Gleaner)

  • Hamilton Tiger-Cats guard Simeon Rottier (Alberta) might make his first CFL start vs. the Calgary Stampeders on Friday.
"First overall draft pick Simeon Rottier played most of the game against Toronto after starting guard Peter Dyakowski was injured on Hamilton's first series.

"(Ticats coach Marcel) Bellefeuille said he was mostly pleased by what he saw from the 6-foot-6, 295-pound Albertan.

" 'Simeon did some good things against some very tough defensive linemen. There's obviously some room for improvement, when you're a rookie and you haven't played all year,' Bellefeuille said.

"Dyakowski's status for Friday is uncertain and Bellefeuille said the young man might get the start as a replacement.

" 'We'll make that decision over the next couple of days, but there's a strong possibility we'll give Simeon another opportunity,' he said."
    (Hamilton Spectator)

  • The talk on the dot-org is that Waterloo middle linebacker Jordan Verdone has a dinged-up shoulder. The Warriors face Laurier on Saturday's University Rush game.

  • With 16 engineering students, Waterloo probably can claim it has "the smartest team in the league," but you know the old joke? A football player with a 98 IQ lines up across from one with a 150 IQ and says, "After I hit you a few times, you'll be just as dumb as me."

  • Sophomore defensive end Andrew Caterine is getting along famously at McMaster (Hamilton Spectator)

  • Laval is promising a legen — wait for it — dary blowout for Vanier Cup 2009.

Concordia defensive back Kyle Smith apparently was in on the tackle on both plays where Montréal QBs were injured last Sunday. Tough luck for the Carabins. One wonders how Smith felt physically. There are two people in every collision! (le Soleil)

  • Running back Jamall Lee (Bishop's) is still exploring NFL options. Seattle Seahawks, maybe? (Vancouver Sun)
Hockey
  • Small note on Alberta's 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers rookies on Wednesday: All three of the Golden Bears' third-period goals were from first-year CIS players. (Coming Down The Pipe!)

  • The Saskatchewan Huskies are already getting some University Cup buzz. (Daily Gleaner)

  • Carleton defenceman Chuck Carré made the Ravens after attending an open tryout. Does that make him a skate-on?

Carré is also studying to become an architect. The third-year Ravens, who almost took out UQTR in the post-season last winter, have a two-game exhibition trip to Manitoba this weekend. (Northern Life)

  • The Nipissing Lakers are less than 48 hours from their first exhibition game, Saturday vs. Ottawa in North Bay. (North Bay Nugget)
Basketball
  • Mark Wacyk's pre-season capsules continue with a look at coach Craig Beaucamp's Victoria Vikes. Did the drawn-out Canada West playoff format cause people to forget UVic (which lost a Pac-D semi-final to Trinity Western) was ranked last season? UVic has lost Tyler Hass, Mitch Gudgeon and guard Brandon Dunlop. (cishoops.ca)

  • The Toronto Raptors will hold a public scrimmage on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. as part of their training camp at the Carleton Ravens' Nest. That is about all the detail at this point. (Raptor Blog)

  1. the smartest team in the league

There's a saying about baseball teams, about how the worse they are at fundamentals, the more they talk about fundamentals. I am sure there is no current relevance to this anecdote whatsoever.

  2. Is that in the same vein with the kids in Little League who get hit by a pitch just to get on base?
