Around the web ... wrapping up a week away

Some links late on a Friday night while stranded at the St. John's airport. Apologies for not getting to a lot of this much, much sooner:

FOOTBALL
  • Huskies Football Outsider has a treasure trove of Canada West pre-season coverage, please click through. The skhuskies YouTube channel.

  • McMaster has got James Edwards back from the B.C. Lions, only it appears he will move to linebacker. At 210 lbs. he was absurdly light for a defensive end. (900 CHML)

  • Speaking of that other football team in Saskatchewan which wears green and white, Queen's alum Rob Bagg's No. 6 is becoming a popular replica jersey. (rodpedersen.com)

  • The dean of the OUA media corps, Morris Dalla Costa, wrote on running back Da'Shawn Thomas joining Western and on the Mustangs being Yates Cup favourites. (London Free Press)

  • London radio host Norman James was pretty candid on his blog while teasing an interview on AM980's new sports show, The Hook:
"I don't believe Canada's greatest sports university is receiving the type of fan support it should, from either it's students or people of London. Perhaps school brass has a plan to change that?"
Greatest sports university? That might set off some phone calls from the 780 area code. (Norman James Sports)
BASKETBALL
  • Guelph coach Chris O'Rourke talks about the decline of visits from NCAA teams, something which has been touched on here in the past. (Guelph Mercury, first read at cishoops.ca)

  • McMaster officially announced forward Keenan Jeppesen's arrival, which cishoops.ca first reported. (Hamilton Spectator)

  • Mark Wacyk took stock of the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Fifth-year off-guard Donnie Gibson, sophomore small forward Warren Ward and power forward Nemenja Baletic will likely be the bulk of star guard Josh Gibson-Bascombe's supporting cast. (cishoops.ca)

  • Mike Koreen chatted with Aaron Doornekamp about the Carleton star signing with Eldo Caserta in Italy. Did everyone see that Tyson Hinz had 18 points in the Ravens' win over Towson on Tuesday? (Kingston Whig-Standard)

  • Water damage to the floor of the Queen's Centre might keep the basketball and volleyball Golden Gaels at Bartlett Gym for a while. (Kingston Whig-Standard)
HOCKEY
  • Laval has a German in its defensive secondary, Western has a player from Georgia (the U.S. state, not the country) as its tailback and Lakehead's hockey team has added a Swede, forward Victor Anilane. Anilane is a big guy (6-foot-3, 202 lbs.) who can snipe (23 goals in 38 games in his final season of junior). He made it to the final selection camp for Sweden's 2008 world junior team, which came within seconds of winning the gold medal. (press release)

  • From David Kilfoil, comes word of two Maritimers who have come aboard with the UNB Varsity Reds, forwards Nick Layton (79 points in 68 QMJHL games) and forward Matt Fillier. Both played with Montreal Junior last season. Fillier, who had 445 penalty minutes across four seasons in junior, should lend new meaning to grinder, since he's taking engineering at UNB! (press release)

  1. A few comments on CIS basketball...
First, I'm sorry to hear the floor at the new sports facility was ruined before anyone even had a chance to use it BUT....how in the name of God can a brand new facility get flooded like that?
Sure there was some helacious storm in Kingston but the old Bartlett floor survived just fine.
Could there be a serious design flaw in the new facility?
Secondly, Tyson Hinz didn't start the game against Towson but if he keeps playing like he did in that game, there will be no way Dave Smart can keep him out of the starting five.
Finally, speaking about the Towson Tigers....you know, I would like to have a word or two with their SID who apparently is accompanying the team and filing game reports.
About the against Carleton's Alumni team game he claimed "Carleton's alumni has knocked off some heavy hitters in the past, including Kansas and Louisville".
Oh how I wish that was true, but Carleton hasn't even had an alumni game in nearly a decade and as we all know the VARSITY team lost a pair of squeakers to the Jayhawks and Cardinals.
Regarding the UQAM game he stated "the Tigers played under UQAM's league rules"...uh, yeah...i'ts called FIBA rules, dude. Perhaps you heard of them?
Finally, apparently he has a scoop on the rest of us because, according to him "Laval is ranked third nationally in a pre season poll"...really?
And what pre season poll is he talking about?
Certainly not one found on the CIS website.
One thing though...apparently they were very impressed that a train runs through Carleton's "very large" campus.
    Neat-o.

  2. Western "Canada's Greatest Sports University"?
Typical myopic Ontario point of view.
Alberta (780) is the only CIS school to win all 11 Team Sport Championships; and 10 of those teams (Men's and Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Hockey, Men's and Women's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Soccer, Women's Rugby and Women's Field Hockey have won a title in the last decade.
Only the Bears football team hasn't claimed a title in the last decade, though they did make it to three straight CW Finals grom 2003 to 2005.

  3. You should tell that to Norman James, since this typical myopic Ontarian was well-aware!

  4. Does Norman cover the Ottatwa Senators or the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Maybe I will see him in my travels.

    PS.

Sager as a CIS supporter I appreciate the efforts of the CIS blog.
