Basketball: Transition looms for Ryerson, York, U of T

Jim Thomas' reports at The Hoop-la.com are always a source of good information. His latest includes a note that it might not be too long before one of the Toronto area's brightest coaching stars is running a university team:
"Humber College coach Darryl Glenn turned down the Manitoba job in early April for family reasons I believe but is still one of the hottest candidates for a CIS job out there. All three Toronto universities will be looking for new coaches over the next three years and Glenn will be a superb catch for any one of these schools. Darryl is highly respected in the basketball community and with his success at Humber can write his own ticket to a CIS coaching job very soon." (emphasis mine)
Toronto's Mike Katz, York's Bob Bain and Ryerson's Glenn Taylor are the deans of the OUA East coaching ranks. Glenn, though, has a solid record that merits a look.

Ottawa coach Dave DeAveiro also has a lot of ties to the Toronto area. It wouldn't do to speculate, but with his university having already lost one coach, the mind does reel a bit.

Thomas also reckons that Chris O'Rourke at Guelph has the best recruiting class in OUA men's basketball, along with Dave Smart at national champion Carleton.

  1. best recruiting classes? I'd wait until the recruiting season is actually over for that declaration. Windsor just announced 2 today in the Windsor Star...with the promise of several more to come.

  2. DeAveiro should move back home... uOttawa sports will continue to fade with the present director providing "leadership". Carleton would be smart to bring in Piche when they get a football team. If DeAveiro moves bet is they'll bring in a francophone who can't coach and then it's back to Carleton winning by 50 and no more Capital Classics

  3. Every year it seems, Windsor hypes a boatload of new recruits.
Last year, Ellis Ffrench was supposed to be the hot shot rookie destined to replace Ryan Steer.
    Well, so much for that.
    Ffrench was a huge bust.
Bottom line, the Lancers had better land some good recruits because losing Greg Surmacz is a huge blow.

  4. Glenn Taylor was fired. Look for Patrick Williams to be the interim coach next year.

  6. it doesn't matter if guelph has the best recruits this year, since o'rourke is the worst coach in the CIS. all his yelling just turns into white noise, although its just asking for him to get thrown out of a few games this year. and as for the recruits guelph wouldn't need them if his coaching didn't make 6 players quit the team in the past 2 years.
