Hoops: Wondering about Windsor on the first Wednesday back

The OUA West plays a Wednesday-Saturday schedule thanks to the proximity of the schools, which gives us a chance to do an extra recap:
  • No. 6 Windsor 60, Guelph 57: The Lancers, from this vantage point, raise a lot of questions. They won by holding the Gryphons to one point in the third quarter. Guelph missed 11 of their 14 foul shots, meaning they would have won if they had only made 50% of their free throws.

Greg Surmacz had a characteristic 22-point, 10-rebound night, but no one else scored in ouble figures. Jay Mott (20 points, including six three-balls) kept Guelph in the game, but the Gryphons are 3-6, not a good spot in a competitive division.

  • No. 9 Western 85, Laurier 66: Brad Smith (16 points in 22 minutes) and Andrew Wedemire (14 in 17) led the way for the Mustangs in a decisive win. Western held Laurier to nine fourth-quarter points, which could be chalked up to the Mustangs' depth.
  • Brock 74, Waterloo 68: The stats aren't up yet, but this pulls the Badgers into a tie for fourth place in the division with the Warriors at 5-4, one game back of Windsor and a half-game behind McMaster, which has a two-game series vs. Lakehead this weekend.
Also of note:
  • Queen's guard Brittany Moore picked a good night to be the first women's player in school to score 40 points in a game. The game, where Queen's beat RMC 79-64, got a fair bit of attention since there was speculation that the improving Paladins might earn their first win since the program joined the OUA. Funny how it works out sometimes. Moore ended up making 11 three-pointers.

  1. Colour me concerned about the Brock-Waterloo result (the OUA now says it's 74-67). Two points in the second and 25 in the third is weird, to say the least, and it's disconcerting that only one player had a decent night, percentage-wise, against a team that's not near the top of the league.

Then again, maybe reports of the Badgers' decline were exaggerated.
